There’s something about beginning a new year that I’ve always found invigorating. I conceive new story ideas, gain a renewed focus, and I feel a newfound freedom to either renew my efforts on unfinished work or toss it in the bin once and for all.
So what kind of goals and projects do I have planned for this coming year? I’m glad you asked!
- Read 40 Books – More reading makes me a better writer, period. I’ll put up a list of upcoming books I’ll be reading here on the site, feel free to follow along at home!
- Finish Writing “The Republic” – Not gonna lie, at the end of 2017 I was very on-the-fence about this novella, which has proven far more difficult than I imagined. Newsletter subscribers already know I’m letting the manuscript sit in time-out during the month of January, but in February I will take up revisions once more. Then you can all read it and we can be depressed together. Yay!
- Finish My Graphic Novel, “A Thousand Deaths” – I spent a good portion of 2017 writing the script, creating concept sketches, and studying visual narrative. Now is the time to give purpose to that preparation. My plan is to have five parts, released throughout the year, and then one final collected edition available by December.
- Write One Short Story Per Month – I have dozens of ideas for short stories and this year I’m making time for them. These are for publication, of course, but I’ll let you know which outlets pick them up for print.
- Write A Rough Draft Of “We’re Not Heroes” – This will be the first novel in a comedic fantasy series. Bryce Dalinger gives bad directions to a passing hero who just happens to be the heir of a powerful nation. When that prince goes missing in dragon-infested mountains, it’s up to Bryce and his friends to find him and avert war.
I’ll be posting more regular updates on Twitter so if that kind of thing interests you, then follow me there! I’m also going to start posting here twice a month, so keep an eye on this space for future developments.
Thanks for reading, it’s been fun. But now it’s time to get to work.
