An Ode to My Dogs

My family was fortunate enough to have acquired two dogs in late February of 2020. These litter-mates are a cross-breed of Scottish Terrier and Poodle, called a “Scoodle.” The sister’s name is Nona, and the brother is Mishmish. They are very fantastic dogs.

Nona is full of energy. Her name derives from an Arabic word for light (Noor نور) and this is a fitting moniker because she sprints much faster than you would expect from a dog her size. The number of blurry photographs we’ve taken of her practically qualify her as a cryptid. She just loves chasing her brother around our yard, trying to catch birds that come forraging, and sometimes she just loves running in figure-eights at full speed.

Mishmish is the yang to Nona’s yin, being generally still and eager for a friendly belly rub. He does have a playful side, however, and one of his favorite tricks is to act like he is done playing and then when his sister does a full-body shake, pouncing upon her unexpectedly. His name is Lebanese Arabic for apricot, which is fitting because he is sweet. He is a very curious pup and often sniffs at things he happens upon. He is usually pretty good about not trying to eat these mysterious artifacts, but sometimes he just has to give it a good chew to make sure it isn’t food.

We love our dogs. We acquired them in late February 2020, just before the pandemic forced all of us to work/learn from home, and I’m very glad of the timing. I’m a little worried that it will be difficult for them to adjust once this danger has passed and three-quarters of their best friends start leaving them during the day, but for now we are just enjoying the time by getting to know them better and understand their wants and needs.
